Through the generosity of many donors, Sanford Health is able to award a number of scholarships annually to employees enrolled in post-secondary education. Qualifications and requirements are outlined in each application.

Application Submission Requirements: 

  • 1 Instructor Scholarship Reference
  • 1 Current Supervisor Scholarship Reference
  • 1 Coworker Scholarship Reference
  • Proof of Enrollment (Letter of Acceptance)
  • Official Transcript or Grades/Credits/GPA (GPA must be 3.5 or higher to be considered)
  • Scholarship Essay


Please note: 

  • Please only apply for the exact scholarships you qualify for
  • If you select "no" for any of the questions, your application will be denied
  • Award amounts vary per scholarship and is highlighted in each description

Award Distribution: Scholarship awards are paid directly to you, the employee or student, to ensure a smooth transition of funds please follow the below steps: 

  • Employees - Please make sure to have your direct deposit set up in One Source (Workday) prior to the end of the desired semester or before payment is to be sent. For step by step instructions on how to set this up refer to the Manage Payment Elections for Expense Reimbursements located on the One Source Expenses article.
  • Students - The application has a section to complete and upload your W-9 form, please complete this prior to submitting your application. Once we confirm your W-9 form is completed accurately, a paper check will be mailed to the address listed on the W-9 form.


Scholarships: 

BOARD OF DIRECTORS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)
The Sanford Health Foundation board of directors in Sioux Falls serve as volunteers to support and guide the Foundation’s work. They chose to establish this scholarship to encourage Sanford Health employees who are seeking to continue their education.

Purpose: Support students who have demonstrated initiative at Sanford Schools of Medical Technology or Radiologic Technology.

Eligibility: Part-time or full-time Sanford Health employees currently pursuing a degree in the health care field or non-employee students at the Sanford Schools of Medical Technology or Radiologic Technology.

Award: Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

DONNA HOWLETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)
Donna Howlett was a dedicated and beloved physical medicine/rehab employee at Sanford. This scholarship was established in her memory.

Purpose: Support Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an institution of higher education.

Eligibility: Recipients must have been employed at Sanford USD Medical Center for one year as a full-time, part-time or PRN patient care technician, nurse aide or therapy aide.

Award: One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded.

HELEN JACOBSON CAFOUREK SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)
Helen Jacobson Cafourek graduated from the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and worked 45 years as a registered nurse. This scholarship was established by her son as a tribute to her dedication to nursing. 

Purpose: To make funds available to those who need financial assistance for their nursing education.

Eligibility: The award will be granted to students who demonstrate the initiative and ability to attend an approved and accredited school of nursing with the intent of graduating and securing employment as nurses. Awards will be made without regard to race, sex or nationality.

JUNGE/MOLLER NURSING ENDOWMENT FUND (Sioux Falls Only)
When Florence Junge passed away in 1990, she stated in her will that a gift be given to the hospital as a memorial to her beloved husband, the late Alton F. Junge. The estate gift established the Junge Nursing Scholarship Endowment the following year. In December 1995, the Moller Loan Scholarship Endowment was established with an estate gift from Norma J. Moller for nursing education. In August 1999, these scholarships were merged to create the Junge/Moller Nursing Scholarship Endowment to further support for nurses. 

Purpose: This scholarship supports Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are students presently enrolled or planning to be enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program, either undergraduate or masters level.

Eligibility: Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are in a scheduled part-time or full-time position and attending a registered nursing program (either undergraduate or masters level) are eligible.

Award: One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.

KELLY KORTAN NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)
Kelly Kortan was a beloved nurse at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford) at the time of her accidental death. This scholarship was established in her memory.

Purpose: This scholarship supports Sanford USD Medical Center employees enrolled in an accredited, undergraduate registered nursing program and are also raising children.

Eligibility: Applicants must have successfully completed at least half of the required credits required for graduation and be employed in a scheduled part-time or full-time position at Sanford USD Medical Center. The student must also be sharing financial support and rearing one or more children.

Award: One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.

RUTH LANCASTER BOZMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

Mary “Kay” Bozman established this endowment scholarship in memory of her mother, Ruth Lancaster Bozman, in 2016. Ruth graduated from the Sioux Valley School of Nursing. 

Purpose: Provide funds for certified nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses to further pursue their education and earn a registered nurse degree.

Eligibility: Must be a certified nursing assistant or licensed practical nurse

Award: One $3,000 scholarship will be awarded.

DR. DENNY G. ORTMEIER MEMORIAL EDUCATION ENDOWMENT FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

Dr. Denny G. Ortmeier started his career at Sioux Valley Hospital as an intern in 1963. After completing his pathology residency, he was certified by the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Ortmeier dedicated his life to medicine at Sioux Valley by serving in several roles throughout his career, including but not limited to associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, chief of family practice and chief of staff. 

Purpose: This scholarship was established to provide health education and related activities associated with Sanford Hospital and its educational programs and employees. This fund is intended to promote continuing professional skill and knowledge development and other activities important in providing health services and medical care.  

Eligibility: Either a USD medical school student or resident, Sanford Health medical or radiology technology student, or Sanford Health care staff member

Award: One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded.

DR. “OTY” KITTELSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Sioux Falls Only)

Dr. H.O. (Oty) Kittelson was known for his leadership in family practice and primary care medicine, his great love for people and students, and his interest in promoting education associated with the specialty of family practice. This scholarship was established in his memory in 1997.


Purpose: Support a Sanford School of Medicine graduate student entering a family practice residency.


Eligibility: Medical student or family practice resident


Award: One $1000 scholarship will be awarded


Donor: Memorial gifts donated to Dr. Kittelson’s family

ALBERT RONICE SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)
Albert Ronice was from Kindred, ND. He was interested in helping educate nurses, so he generously left a bequest in his estate to establish this scholarship in 1987 to support nursing students pursuing their bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for nursing students entering their fourth year of training for their bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Eligibility: Any student may apply, but first priority will be given to St. Luke’s School of Nursing graduates. Second priority will be given to currently employed Sanford Health associates and third priority to other students. Other criteria will be financial need and academic excellence.

Award: One $2,100 scholarship will be awarded.

MARY JO LANGENWALTER SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)
Mary Jo Langenwalter was born in Breckenridge, Minn, and grew up near Fairmount, ND. After graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in medical technology, she fulfilled a career in the medical field. This scholarship was established after she passed away in 2002.

Purpose: Provide financial assistance for tuition to a current clinical laboratory science student who has a great financial need.

Eligibility: A current clinical laboratory science student with proven financial need.

Award: Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.
