Through the generosity of many donors, Sanford Health is able to award a number of scholarships annually to employees enrolled in post-secondary education. Qualifications and requirements are outlined in each application.

Below are the scholarships available for employees. A brief description of eligiblity is included. For further details, click on the application link. Please contact Laura Woitte-Currier with questions at educationalassistance@sanfordhealth.org.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

The Sanford Health Foundation Scholarship Fund was created by the Board of Directors of the Sanford Health Foundation to award Sanford Health employees who are continuing their education in a healthcare related field.

Purpose: This scholarship is available to scheduled part-time or full-time Sanford Health employees currently pursuing a degree in the health care field, or non-employee students who have demonstrated the initiative and ability to attend Sanford Schools of Medical Technology or Radiologic Technology.

Eligibility: Available to any scheduled part-time or full-time Sanford Health employees currently pursuing a degree in the health care field or non-employee students of the Sanford Schools of Medical Technology or Radiologic Technology.

Award: Four, $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

DONNA HOWLETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

This scholarship was established in memory of Donna Howlett, a physical medicine/rehab employee.

Purpose: This scholarship is available to Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an institution of higher education.

Eligibility: Recipients must have been employed at Sanford USD Medical Center for one year as a full-time, part-time, or PRN patient care technician, nurse aide or therapy aide.

Award: One, $1,500 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

HELEN JACOBSON CAFOUREK SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

Established May 3, 1989

The Helen Jacobson Cafourek Scholarship Fund was established as an endowed fund by Garry and Dianne Jacobson in tribute to Garry’s mother, Helen. Helen Jacobson Cafourek graduated from the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and worked forty-five years as a registered nurse with a career involving practice roles at both McKennan and Sioux Valley Hospital.

Purpose: To make funds available for those who need financial assistance for their nursing education at approved and accredited institutions.

Eligibility: By application, the award will be granted to students who demonstrate the initiative and ability to attend an approved school of nursing with the intent of graduating and securing employment as nurses. Awards will be made without regard to race, sex or nationality.

Award: One, $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

JUNGE/MOLLER NURSING ENDOWMENT FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

The Junge Nursing Scholarship Endowment was established July 1991 with an estate gift. The Moller Loan Scholarship Endowment was established December 1995 with an estate gift received for nursing education. In August 1999, these scholarships were merged to create the Junge/Moller Nursing Scholarship Endowment.

Purpose: This scholarship is available to Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are students presently enrolled or planning to be enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program, either undergraduate or masters level.

Eligibility: Sanford USD Medical Center employees who are in a scheduled part-time or full-time position and attending a registered nursing program (either undergraduate or masters level) are eligible.

Award: One, $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

KELLY KORTAN NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND (Sioux Falls Only)

The Kelly Kortan Nursing Scholarship Fund was created by Kelly Kortan’s family July 1998 with memorial gifts received after Kelly’s accidental tragic death while employed as a nurse at then Sioux Valley Hospital.

Purpose: This scholarship is available to Sanford USD Medical Center employees enrolled in an accredited, undergraduate registered nursing program.

Eligibility: Applicants must have successfully completed at least half of the required credits required for graduation and be employed in a scheduled part-time or full-time position at Sanford USD Medical Center. The student must also be sharing the financial support and rearing one or more children.

Award: One, $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

Ruth Lancaster Bozman Memorial Scholarship Endowment Scholarship (Sioux Falls Only)

Purpose:  To make funds available to provide scholarships to Certified Nursing Assistants and Licensed Practical Nurses to pursue further education to get their Registered Nurse degree, following guidelines set forth by the Alumni Association of the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing Scholarship Endowment.



KOTAPAY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)

The Kotapay Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 with the Sanford Health Foundation, Fargo region.  Kotapay hosts an annual Gold Tournament to raise dollars to support scholarships for nurses employed at Sanford in the Fargo Region.

Purpose:  This scholarship is available to Sanford employees in the Fargo Region who are accepted students in an accredited entry level nursing program or advancing their nursing education in an accredited nursing program.

Eligibility:  Sanford employees in the Fargo Region who are in a scheduled part-time or full-time position, in good standing with no disciplinary action, and accepted for attendance in an accredited nursing program.

Award:  Seven, $2000 scholarships will be awarded.  The scholarship will be paid to the employee in one payment, in January of the following year.

LUCI SPAETH HOLTE SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)

Luci was born June 17, 1952 at the Ada Hospital, the fifth child of Gerard and Judy (Barrett) Spaeth. She graduated from Ada High School in 1970. Luci completed a science degree at Bemidji State College and a nursing degree at St. Lukes School of Nursing. On June 6, 1980 she began her employment at St. Lukes as a cardiac nurse and continued working for now Sanford Health (Day Unit), until her illness prevented it in October 2012.

Besides her love for her children, family and friends, nursing was Luci’s passion. Her love and commitment to her patients included knitting hundreds of chemo hats to be donated to the patients at Roger Maris. Luci loved dancing, playing golf and working in her yard. She also enjoyed softball, bowling, playing Pinochle and reading.
Sanford Health Foundation is pleased to be able to award a $1,000 nursing scholarship to a current Sanford employee wishing to obtain a degree in nursing.

Purpose: The purpose of the Luci Spaeth Holte Nursing Scholarship is to provide financial assistance for a current Sanford Health employee wishing to obtain a degree in nursing.

Eligibility: A current Sanford Health employee wishing to pursue a degree in
nursing and demonstrates financial need. The recipient must attend an accredited school and provide documentation of acceptance.

Award: One, $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the appropriate financial aid office in one payment, in January of the following year.

ALBERT RONICE SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)

In 1980, the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing became the recipient of a bequest from the estate of the late Albert Ronice of Kindred, North Dakota. Mr. Ronice was interested in helping educate nurses. With the closing of the school in 1987, Sanford Health Foundation was given the responsibility of distributing the money in a manner which best fit the original intent.

Sanford Health Foundation is pleased to be able to award a $2,100 scholarship for a nursing student entering their fourth year of training for their Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for nursing students entering their fourth year of training for their Bachelor’s degree in nursing through the Tri-College Nursing Program.

Eligibility: Any student may apply, but first priority will be given to St. Luke’s School of Nursing graduates, second priority will be given to currently employed Sanford Health associates and third priority to other students. Other criteria will be financial need and academic excellence.

Award: One $2,100 scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship will be paid to the appropriate financial aid office in one payment, in January of the following year.

MARY JO LANGENWALTER SCHOLARSHIP (Fargo Only)

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for tuition for a current CLS student who has a great financial need.

Eligibility: A current clinical laboratory science student with proven financial need.

Award: Two, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship payments will be made to the appropriate financial aid office in January of the following year.
